The point of satire is to attack the powerful, to expose their hypocrisy and absurdity, and of course to be funny. If satire is directed downwards it is not satire, it’s bullying.

Some famous satirists have pilloried the powerful but also expressed pro-establishment prejudices. James Gillray, for example, satirised the royal family but also pilloried French revolutionaries (even depicting them as cannibals) and Irish rebels.
