Escape to Victory

I caught the end of 'Escape to Victory' (1981) last night and then this morning I found this unofficial website dedicated to 'the greatest football film ever made' and a film that has been voted in the 'top 100 greatest war movies of all time'. From a Marxist point of view, the film certainly lacks sophistication and is full of cliche as well as at times a soft nationalism, but many football fans rever it, especially Ipswich Town fans as it stars John Wark, Russell Osman and Laurie Sivell (as the German goalkeeper). And lets face it, Ipswich fans have got little else to get excited about at the moment...

High time your blog recognised the greatness of this film. Dont forget that several other Ipswich players were stunt doubles for the actors as well - I think Paul Cooper stood in for Stallone in the goalkeeping action shots. Granted, the film does lack a certain sophistication but it does show how a multi ethnic, multi national group of people working together can overcome dictatorial racial monsters. Doesn't it ? Maybe I'm clutching at straws. No, I'm definitely clutching at straws.....
